Scott Mackenzie threatened to cut off his victim's genitals when he told him he wanted to be a woman during the assault, committed hours after the men first met.

Police arrived at Mackenzie's flat in Inverness to find William Wood kneeling on the floor covered in blood with his attacker standing behind him holding a knife to his throat.

Officers managed to persuade the knife attacker to drop the weapon before they restrained him.

Mackenzie (27) of Duncraig Street, Inverness, told police: "I f---ing hate poofs like. F---ing homophobic. People like that should not be able to walk in society."

Mackenzie admitted attempting to murder Mr Wood (24) on October 30 last year by repeatedly striking him with knives, threatening to cut off his private member and placing a knife to his neck, when he appeared at the High Court in Edinburgh yesterday (Wednesday).

Judge Lord Brodie deferred sentence on Mackenzie for a background report and risk assessment and a psychiatric report. He remanded him in custody.

He added: "This is clearly a serious case and the circumstances are a little unusual."

The court heard Mackenzie's girlfriend, Louisa Chisholm, had introduced him to Mr Wood.

Advocate depute Alastair Brown said: "Mr Wood described himself to the accused as a bisexual transvestite. He is the process of obtaining gender reassignment.

"During the time he spent in the company of the accused he was, as part of that treatment and also it appears as a matter of personal preference, dressed as a woman."

All three spent the afternoon drinking cider and Buckfast wine before returning to Mackenzie's flat where Miss Chisholm fell asleep.

Mr Brown said Mackenzie had been asking Mr Wood questions "on the theme of his sexuality".

"Mr Wood formed the impression – erroneously it appears – that the accused was sexually interested in him. In what seems to have been the late evening, Mr Wood undressed down to a pair of ladies' satin pants," he said.

The advocate depute said Mr Wood made a pass at the other man but it was rejected.

The conversation shifted to Mackenzie's interest in boxing and the pair began sparring.

Mackenzie told police later Mr Wood had started to come on to him but the assault victim denied he had exposed himself.

Mr Brown said Miss Chisholm woke up and interpreted the "play fighting" between the men as sexual activity and shouted at Mackenzie he was "gay" and "filthy".

Mackenzie became enraged and went into the kitchen and returned with two knives.

He began shouting at Mr Wood telling him he hated homosexuals and began to cut and stab him during an ordeal that lasted more than two hours.

Mackenzie told his victim to sit on the floor and when he tried to stand up he jabbed him in the arm with a knife.

"He called Mr Wood a "poof" and when he responded to that by saying that it was not true and that he was someone who wanted to be a woman, the accused threatened to cut off his private parts then and there," said the advocate depute.

The victim lay on his stomach in response to the threat and Mackenzie stabbed him in the buttock and cut his face and leg.

He also inflicted a slicing cut to the injured man's neck which was potentially fatal because it came close to severing a major blood vessel.

The advocate depute said: "It is that injury, coupled with the extended nature of the attack and the consequent blood loss, that has led the Crown to regard the offence as attempted murder."

The schizophrenic knife attacker made a 999 call and said he had "cut somebody up".

When police arrived they found the kneeling victim covered from head to toe in blood. He was taken to hospital where his wounds were stitched, but will be left with scars to his face and neck.

Mackenzie was seen by a psychiatrist who said he was fit to plead but added there was a background of "longstanding discomfort and dislike of homosexuals".

Mackenzie, who has previous convictions, committed the murder bid after he was freed under two separate bail orders at Inverness Sheriff Court.

A KNIFE attacker was jailed for six years on Friday after he tried to murder a bisexual transvestite who had made a pass at him.

Defence solicitor advocate Krista Johnston: "This wasn't an offence committed by him through any hatred on his part towards homosexuals, but rather because of the circumstances that arose on this occasion."

Miss Johnston said Mackenzie had expressed genuine remorse following the assault.

Judge Lord Brodie told Mackenzie, he accepted he had "no general dislike of homosexuals".

Lord Brodie added: "It is accepted that the victim made a pass at you and your then girlfriend made a remark which was upsetting."

As well as a jail sentence Lord Brodie also ordered that MacKenzie be kept under supervision for a further two years.
