Passing on a lovely article from a friend.
From: stepheniemace stepheniemace@ yahoo.ca
She had been at a discotheque Saturday night and it was now Sunday morning. Tired but happy she went to the only 24 hour restaurant in downtown Toronto at the time.
Sitting there having a cup of coffee she realized that her makeup was askew, her "five o'clock" shadow was showing very well, and that some people were looking at her in a not very nice way. She was tired and showed it by slumping like a man would on at the counter where she drank her coffee. The subway would open soon [it opened late on Sundays] and she could go home and another day would be over.
She had felt "pretty" earlier on but now she realizes she just looks like a man in drag. While skinny, she is six feet tall and has wide shoulders. She looks out of place and she knows it.
Leaving the restaurant she noticed 5 men following her. Before she could get to the subway they attacked her. They started to punch and kick her but somehow she managed to rolled away and almost got hit by a car when she rolled out into the street to avoid them.
The men were out "gay bashing" the night before and she was to be their final target before going home after another successful night.
Kicking off her shoes she ran like hell with blood streaming down her face, stocking torn, feet cut bleeding, dress torn, bra half off her and clutching terrified to her purse with her identification in fearful that if they get that they will know where she lives.
Fortunately her adrenaline allows her to ignore the pain and her fear allows her to outrun the men. One had a baseball bat and threw it at her and she watched it sail by.
On the way home in shock and with the pain starting up, she realized that she had escaped certain major injury and possible death. Ashamed, scared and feeling guilty for some reason, she sees the way people are looking at her on the long ride home on the transit. Barefoot and bleeding she cries silently while trying
to keep herself covered with what is left of her dress. She makes it home where she had a hot bath to soother her aches. Bandaged her cuts as best she could then went to bed.
The next day she could hardly move from all of the bruises and pain all over her body. She knows she could have died. She made it to the bathroom and looking in the mirror said, "I will never allow this to happen again."
She never went out again as a woman.
In some of the forums I have noticed that a few women there say they don't care what others think about them or if they "pass" etc. And I am happy for them. Now a days in many places in United kingdom, Canada and the USA it is possible not to care. But if that is possible it is only because some people have gone on before them and gotten the beatings and the death that allowed for their freedom.
A perfect example of this is what happened recently in the USA.
Barrack Obama was elected the president.
And the only reason he could do that is because of all those who had help pave the way before him. Such as Martin Luther King Jr.
http://en.wikipedia .org/wiki/ Martin_Luther_ King_Jr
And the reason Martin could do what he did was because of Rosa Parks.
http://en..wikipedi a.org/wiki/ Rosa_Parks
And what she did was possible because of another president called Abraham Lincoln.

The point I think I am trying to make is this. Please don't not make fun of, belittle or invalidate those who want to "pass" and spend so much time and effort to do so. Some have been through the "war zone" and have trouble "getting over it". If you have these freedoms it is only because others have bled their blood and some even paid with their lives for you to enjoy the freedoms that some of us now have.
Also the gay bashing is not ended either. Not too long ago a Mr Webster was beaten to death with baseball bats in Stanley Park near where I use too live for being gay.
It still goes on.
Ok so that is my rant and also why I am a little obsessed with passing. I don't want to be a statistic. I just wanna be pretty. And baseball bats have a permanent way of ruining a person day.
Thank you for reading this.
