After discussing this at a Ren meeting, I thought i'd ask who people thought as the best actor (or actress) who has played a TG role.
A few names were mentioned (we all said different names !) and I'll let those who nominated actors at Ren post who they think was best.
I will put in the first two names.
Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie. Watch the shot of him walking down the street toward camera and notice he trips on something. The woman behind him (not an actress) looks down to see what the woman in front of her tripped on.
I'm tempted to also mention Felicity Huffman for TransAmerica but that role should have been played by a real TS.
OK your turn. Best actor (or actress) who has played a TG role, the film/tv programme (if possible) and why (if you want to say why).

Alistair Sims is often reputed to be the best - as he not got just mannerisms but the voice just right, although St Trinians is not the most glamorous of films. I also loved Jack Lemon, as he got the spirit of cross dressing just right, basing his part in Some Like it hot on his mother. I did not like Dustin Hoffman, as although convincing his portrayal of a woman was, it was not flattering - the silly breathless voice and constant shaking - ugh, I thought Robin Williams was better in Mrs Doubtfire than that Mind you Partick Swaze was good in film whose name I can never remember, as when I first saw it, I did not recognize him throughout the film. But if you have resources of film makeup you can do magic. But is voice and mannerism that is done to the actor - and that is why I love A Sims and Jack Lemmon. If to chose between them, Jack, as he got that manic nature of what it is to cross dress - he played not greatest woman, but best cross dresser. Just my thoughts

Cillian Murphy is fantastic, and Dustin Hoffman was good playing tootsie for laughs, Hoffman is naturally unfeminine so he did well Murphy is naturally androgenous, I think I still like the actor (cant remember his name) in triple echo who was an army deserter and dressed as a woman so he could escape detection.

Hiya Lynsey
The actor who played the part of the army deserter in The Triple Echo was Brian Deacon.
And as for Callian Murphy, he/she was outstanding in Breakfast on Pluto.
My all time favourite film has to be Some Like it Hot. Did you know that it was shot in Black & White because when costume tests revealed that the makeup that Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon wore gave their faces a green tinge. And my favourite line in the film is 'Will you look at that! Look how she moves! It's like Jell-O on springs. Must have some sort of built-in motor or something. I tell you, it's a whole different sex!' brilliant!

I'd agree with you Kim - I loved Different for girls (why didn't I tape it?)
and no....timid isn't a word that springs to mind when I think of you :)
How are you anyway?
Reggie - I didn't know that was Julie Andrews - I saw it as a child - it was on the telly one saturday when my parents had friends round, the TV was on but no-one was watching it..... except me (but trying to be nonchalant)
I just bought breakfast on Pluto on ebay - having read about it here - I'd never heard of it :)

I would go with Adrian Pasdar , alongside Julie Walters , as a straight TV in Just Like a Woman . A very useful film if you are trying to explain to your partner that you like to dress occasionally and it doesn't make you any less a man.

Good choice there, Just like a Woman is excellent and based on a true story, how many of us can relate to some of those situations, id just like to mention Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving & Guy Pearce in Priscilla Queen of the Desert
Even Kurt Russell has put on a pair of fishnets and a short leather mini in the film Tango and Cash when escaping the police as Kiki with Terri Hatcher on a motorbike. Only a cameo just for one short scene!

In playing a pretty bad Transvestite David Walliams plays the part to perfection and Matt Lucas is perfect in a supporting role as his apprentice; even to the point that he has a moustache!:D

Hi Debs, I'm OK still driving buses, when you coming to Blackpool again? There was a truly dire performance in an American TV movie called Doctors Lives I think from the early 70's. Don't know who it was

I want what I want starring Anne Heywood as Roy/Wendy was supposed to be good but it was made in the early 70s and has been on the missing list for many years.I saw the first 10 minutes due to my inability to work a video recorder!
