I can attest to the benefits of an under-bust girdle. It's high enough to stop 'roll-over' and really whips the torso into shape. And of course it has suspenders for those lovely FF stockings :)

CORSETS? Now then. I have just made a dress for Danielle from Southampton. A large lady if ever there was one. First off I sent her the measurement form to fill out -this one is different since it is for CAD. I could not get her to understand that I get the basic block pattern from the measurements she supplied is worked out in my PC CAD program. Also I needed HER measurements and not corsetted measurements. She sent me her corsetted measurements plus or minus. I made a dress to these measurements but not to my usual standard and finished every seam off with bias binding- knowing I was going to have to take it all apart again.
After a period of serious weeping, I tried to explain once again that I make these dresses to fit the PERSON and not to any manufacturers sizings. I leave room for bust paddings. The general idea is to use bust pads and petticoats to give the feminine outline whilst the dress can be worn in good comfort --- without the need of corsetry.
I do this since corsets do not reduce sizing they merely move the excess elsewhere in the torso. A simple sleeveless dress made by me usually contains 48 pieces which includes lining and interlining throughout. The dress will retain its shape and will not require ironing at every wearing. The handsewing gives the seams neatness without puckering, and where possible I try to conceal any stitching inside or out.
When other girls try my dresses on they usually say that they can feel the love put into the work

The Cristmas excess being too,too apparent, I went to Woods at Morecambe. Unfortunately the shop does not stock the really heavy stuff (=boned corsets, retro etc) but I purchased a waist cinch, with stiffening. I specified boning, saying that when absent, I found the material "rolled over". The lady (Manageress?) told me this was because the garment was not tight enough, rather than too tight, as I had always assumed. The whole transaction took place in a very matter of fact and pleasant manner, and I was the only customer, As I was leaving, a lady came in, with a man, and asked for a "measurement". I did not wait to see for which party, but Woods do claim that 70% of women are wearing the wrong size bra. www.woods-online.co.uk, or shop on the Prom' at Morecambe
