Hi girls, I was wondering if any one can give a name of a good wig shop here in the north west. I've been to Yvonne Barlows for a few fittings but they are a bit pricey.

I did buy one from there but i don't feel comfortable in it. Maybe i should try playing with it with some pins or accessories to alter the look?

What I'm looking for is a wig that suits my face. I've thought about buying one on-line. But you never know what it will be like.

I saw on a thread on here of a shop in Southport, but i can't seem to find it.
cheers

Hi Niki

I bought my very first wig from Yvonne Barlow’s, when it was Yvonne’s, since it’s changed hands I’m not so sure of their customer service now. The Southport shop you are referring to is Wigs-R-Us Ltd. Link below.

http://www.wigsrusltd.com/

I’ve never been but have heard good things about them from various girls.

The other place I would recommend is Transfixed, Manchester. Link below

http://www.transfixedonline.co.uk/

Sarah Hughes, Ren girls, has bought a couple wigs from them and was very happy with the service.

Ok so what wig suits you? It’s very hard to just look on a web site and say, yes that’s looks good, you go and buy it and when you try it on, it looks awful? You do need the service of a good wig specialist to help you, they will show you dozens and you should try on as many as you can just so you can look and feel how they sit, but again the assistant will be able to tell what does and what doesn’t suit you. When I went for my first fitting I was in there over an hour and tried on dozens of all shapes, colours and styles. This one session defined what colours and style which suited my face and complexion.

I must also tell that I went for my fitting as Jenny because a wig will look totally different when you are dressed and wearing makeup, to, well bloke mode!

Also a wig straight out of the box, to me, has to be cut in as they say. Again some wig shops will do this? But I go to a hairdresser in Blackpool called Darrans, and he cuts all mine to suit. The last time he charged me a fiver per wig.

Good quality wigs I would recommend would be Rene of Paris, Noriko and Natural Image. The Renes’ are the top end and can start around £100 right the way through to £300+. Noriko are the mid range ones £80 to about £200 and Natural Image ones about £50 to £150. Talking of synthetics here, real hair ones and you will be paying £400+. There are other makers but I’ve been extremely happy with all three of the above.

So how much do you pay? This depends on quality, will you be wearing it on a regular basis and will you be wearing it in public or just around the house? The old adage of, you get what you pay for, is very true for wigs, cheap price - cheap/poor quality wig? But if it’s just for around the house then maybe that’s an option? But if you are intending to be seen in public, then buy the best you can possibly afford in my opinion.

Look after your wig. My original one that I bought from Yvonne’s, 2 years ago, is still going strong, I brush it after every wear and I wash it every 10 – 12 outings and it’s still looking good. Also use the recommended wig shampoos, conditioners and wig brushes.

The other advantage of going to a wig specialist in the first place is that you’ll get a feel of what colour/style will suit you. Then you can look on the internet and buy with a reasonable amount of confidence, knowing that it will suit you. If you shop around you can pick them up cheaper than you will buy them from a wig specialist?

When you first start to wear a wig you will feel uncomfortable, bare with it, it will settle in. There are different wig sizes for different head sizes? But the majority are designed for women, who by their very nature have smaller heads than we do. So they will feel tight to begin with. The more times you wear it, it will stretch a little and feel more comfortable.

Hope this has been of some help. There are other wig shops in the north west and other Ren girls might recommend them as well.

Jen

It amazes me that our Steph in Blackpool gets overlooked, worth a visit if your in town im sure there would be no obligation to buy and She makes a good Cuppa.

One place i like is Oldham street Manchester,Pauls hair and another place across the street have some good wigs for well under £100 i got a long real hair wig from Oldham Street a few years ago for £60 (its the one in my pics with the movie star wallpaper, most of the other pics are my own hair.

Other places are Wigs up North(manchester and on the net) also good for makeup, and DeeSelecta in Bolton is good i am told.

I did not tell you this! but go to a wig Specialist and find the one that suits you,but then go to Oldham street Manchester to buy it cheaper,i could get lynched for telling you that! LOL you can also order them from China on the net

And instead of going to trans places get your makeup stockings etc from Superdrug and you accesorys from Clairs, they have a good range of clip on Earings and costume jewelry for example, and both places do not bat an eyelid if a bloke buys it.

You're a bad girl, Jackie.:p

I have used Wig'R'Us a few times now and found Jenni to be a wonderfully supportive and knowledgable woman. She isn't afraid to tell you if something doesn't suit you, so you can be confident that the wig you get will please you and suit you. First class service.

Hi Jen, went to wigs r us on friday and have ordered a wig. She's a lovely lady. She's is going to show me how to look after wigs. I was there for about an hour, we chatted about lots of stuff.

She had some fantastic ones but at a price. Just hope it comes in before the christmas party, thanks again,

I mainly shop, and have just bought a wig, at DeeSelecta - no dearer than "straight " shops, though it is fun to shop "en femme" where GGs shop. The wig I bought is on my recent album, but I think I will go to Darren, and get the fringe trimmed.

Just to bring this up to date, albeit in a pretty negative fashion.......
I have had many dealings with Alternative hair which used to be Yvonne Barlows on Church St here in Blackpool, until she sold out to a large company who then changed the name.
Unfortunately their customer service (and my satisfaction) have plummeted with a recent experience I had. Those who know me, know that I have kept the same wig style for quite a while now, I wanted to fix the hair and concentrate on other stuff, seemed like a good idea. Anyhow, as a consequence I have had to replace my in use wig on a regular basis, due to the excessive number of trips out some might say......
Last year I ordered up 2 of my favourite style and colour at the same time as I wanted to make sure it didnt go out of stock and not be available, got a price match from other suppliers on the net and was quite happy. Even though the second one of the pair when I got it out of my storage to bring it into use was already "frizzed" at the top, I put that down to my own fault for not checking it properly when I picked them up, so I was still happy to re-order from them again.
So, just before Christmas I ordered another same style/colour as usual, had to wait 6 weeks or so for it to arrive, no problem as its for my stock ready for when needed. Unfortunately I did not for one minute consider that they would not do a price match, after all they were so reasonable before. But no, not only would they not reduce the price but they charged £20 more than their advertised web price! Gobsmacked I disputed with them but paid up as I had ordered it. Sent off an email complaining and eventually I got an answer from the manageress, company policy blah blah.......

I cannot and would not recommend this company anymore, the shop changed for the worse when Yvonne Barlows was taken over, the quality was noticeably lower but adequate as it was local and very handy to pop in.
Much better value can be had elsewhere I reckon.
